          Doing Time, Doing Vipassana (1997)

dir Eilona Karuna [55 min + discussion]

Winner of the Golden Spire award at the 1998 San Francisco International Film festival, this extraordinary documentary takes viewers into Tihar, India's largest and toughest prison, showing the dramatic change brought about by the introduction of Vipassana, the non-sectarian meditation technique taught by the Buddha 2500 years ago. This is a story of how an ancient practice of meditation brought to prisoners the realization that incarceration is not the end but possibly the beginning of a new life.

Following the screening at the Brattle Theatre, there will be discussion with the film’s director, Eilona Karuna, and with Jenny Phillips, the woman who recently introduced Vipassana into a prison outside
Birmingham, Alabama.
